1871 Voter Registrations: L-W

The following L-W pages complete the reproduction of the Bass River 1871 Voter Registration Booklet. There were no X's, Y's or Z's. The M's and S's are not posted as they were previously posted for Beverly Mathis Robinson who requested the Mathis family pages (Click here to go to the ""M" pages.) and John Yates who is related to the Sears family (Click here to go to the "S" pages.).

I hope that Don Maxwell and others out in the Blog-O-Sphere were able to identify some relatives and were not surprised by their political party affiliation.

  1. I have been enjoying your blog postings about the 1871 Bass River Voter Registration booklet. And I, too, have been amused about the seemingly upside down party affiliations between today and yesteryear. This morning, though, for some reason, I felt compelled to see what the heck was going on way back in 1871.

I went to the good old internet and did a little checking. The year 1871 was the second year of the administration of the Republican President Ulysses S. Grant, and it was our country's Reconstruction period after the Civil War.

Today's Republican National Committee web site -- gop.com -- shows the following events that occurred around 1871. The spin on the language appearing below is courtesy of today's Republican Party. I probably should have gone into the Democratic Party's web site, too, but I've had enough spin for today. Enough is enough.

So, as you can see the Republicans of 1871 were that era's progressives. They passed the 15th Amendment in 1869,and passed a Civil Rights Act aimed at the Ku Klux Klan in 1871. The Democrats of 1871 were that era's conservatives. Ain't history wonderful!!!!!!

    Cheers,
    Linda M
